History
Project MotiVATe, formerly know as Camp for Youth, was founded in 1996 by Natalie My-Oanh Nguyen and Anh Ngo of the Vietnamese Community of Orange County as a summer camp for Vietnamese American Youth.
In 2000, under Nicole Nguyen, Project MotiVATe included a year-long mentoring program as well as the summer camp. In 2004, the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations (UVSA) became the umbrella organization for Project MotiVATe, and the Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA) became the mentor organization, offering resources and facilities to help the program development and growth.
In 2005, with the help of California State University, Long Beach's Master's in Industrial/Organizational Psychology program, Project MotiVATe had an organizational restructure and became focused on academic mentoring.
Project MotiVATe
Project MotiVATe is a mentorship program to help Vietnamese Anerican youth graduate from high school or obtain a GED and pursue higher education with implications for benefits in other areas of their life (social, familial, cultural).
Mission
Project MotiVATe's mission is to motivate and influence Vietnamese American youth through academic mentoring using a holistic approach (i.e., taking into consideration social, familial, and cultural factors) to graduate from high school or obtain a GED and pursue higher education.
Mentoring Program Focus
• Educational or academic mentoring helps mentored youth improve their overall academic achievement.
• Career mentoring helps the youths develop the necessary skills to enter or continue on a career path.
• Personal development mentoring supports youth during times of personal or social stress and provides guidance for decision making.
Need for Project MotiVATe
Project MotiVATe was created due to the lack of support for Vietnamese American youth with academic problems. Other organizations providing service to Vietnamese American youth with academic problems charge a fee which many families are not able to pay. Project MotiVATe provides free academic tutoring for students who display the need for academic mentorship.
Goals
The program's goals for the youth are threefold:
•
To attend study hall provided by Project MotiVATe
•
To graduate from high school or obtain a GED after completion of Project MotiVATe
•
To attend a vocational school, junior college, or 4-year university after completion of Project MotiVATe.
